Textile Artist
Sagwadi Mohlabi (b. 2002) is a Limpopo born South African self-taught fibre artist working through punch needling, tufting, and fibre-based photography construction, drawing on the woven Xitsonga traditions of the women who raised her in Limpopo. Her practice moves between the choreographiesof everyday life : labour, self-presentation , gathering and the private language of cloth passed down through her grandmother's woven skirts, treating material as a carrier of movement, memory, and self-identity.
Her work sits at the intersection of desire and acquisition within black womanhood, returning continuously to her maternal archive. In 2025, she undertook an international residency with Rele Gallery in Lagos, Nigeria, was named a 2026 finalist for the Blessing Ngobeni Art Prize award and presented her first showing at RMB Latitudes Art Fair 2026.
