Phenyo Melody Madiba

Pyrography Artist

BIOGRAPHY

Phenyo Melody Madiba, artistically known as Mel Madiba, is a pyrography artist whose work is a meditation on identity, self, and the divine feminine. Born in Mafikeng, raised in Pretoria, and living in Johannesburg, she moves between these landscapes - both physically and spiritually - interrogating the textures of selfhood through the ancient language of fire on wood, leather, and other materials.

She refers to burning as both destruction and creation; her practice is a dialogue between past and present, an exploration of black womanhood as a site of power, reclamation, and vulnerability. Her compositions blend controlled precision with raw, expressive burns and marks as a homage to balance. Gold, African bronze blue, and elemental textures act as alchemical conduits, speaking to the celestial and the terrestrial, the seen and the unseen.

Madiba’s influences span across disciplines, drawing from the visual poetry of Lina Iris Viktor, the photographic and sculptural narratives of Zanele Muholi, and the sonic landscapes of Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah. Her work has been recognised by the Design Indaba Emerging Creatives Program and the Blessing Ngobeni Art Prize, marking her as a formidable voice in contemporary African art.

Through her art, Madiba carves, etches, and sparks out a world where black women exist in their fullest spectrum, unapologetic, adorned, and infinite.
