Keabetswe Seema (b. 1999, Johannesburg, South Africa) engages with questions of narrative agency, memory, and Black matriarchal family, often against the backdrop of colonial histories, spirituality, and the politics of representation. Exploring the black matriarch as a site through which personal and collective memory converge, examining how the black matriarch mediates relationships between ancestry, landscape, and speculative futures. Informed by Afro-surrealism, Afro-futurism, and Black feminist thought, Seema interweaves these concerns through immersive installations and mixed-media works that encompass collage, printmaking, photography, sound, and painting.
Through layered visual and spatial narratives, the work surveys the sacred, the domestic, and the political as interconnected terrains where histories are reclaimed, identities are reimagined, and alternative futures are envisioned. Recent solo exhibitions include Beholding Black Mirrors, Shanghai (2026); A Deposit From Heaven, Cape Town (2025); Let The Fire Lead You Home, Cape Town (2024). Seema received a BA Fine Arts from the University of Pretoria in 2023 and is the recipient of the Tilga Art Prize (4th Prize winner) (2025) and the Blessing Ngobeni Art Prize (2024).
