Keonah Nyembe

Visual Artist

BIOGRAPHY

Keonah Nyembe (B. 2003, Johannesburg) is a visual artist and researcher whose practice re-imagines the human-nature relationship through a post-humanist lens. Her work explores the complexities of ecology, memory and the environment, creating speculative landscapes that challenge Western botanical classifications and conventional perceptions of reality. This curiosity led her to first pursue Visual Art at the National School of the Arts in Johannesburg before graduating with distinction from the University of Johannesburg, where she is currently pursuing her Master's degree in Visual Arts.

Her practice has gained significant professional recognition, culminating most recently in her February 2026 solo exhibition, 'Emergent Ecologies', at the Worldart Gallery in Cape Town. Nyembe's artistic practice is characterized by deep engagement with material agency and experimentation, often treating her mediums as active collaborators. She blends traditional techniques with contemporary, eco-conscious approaches, specialising in handmade papermaking using natural fibers, printmaking, and immersive installations. Through these tactile, process-driven mediums, Nyembe constructs otherworldly environments and artist's books that invite viewers to interrogate the interconnectedness of the human and non-human worlds, positioning nature not as a passive subject, but as a vibrant participant.

Nyembe's innovative artistic practice has been showcased in several exhibitions. She was notably a Top 11 Finalist for the Blessing Ngobeni Art Prize 2025, with her work exhibited at the Johannesburg Stock Exchange reception. Additionally, she was a Top 6 finalist and First Runner-up of an art competition and two-month residency at Ellis House. Her work has been featured in recent group exhibitions, including 'The Kids These Days Vol. 3' in February 2025, which showcased the work of recent Fine Arts graduates in Johannesburg. In November 2024, her work was part of the 'Metamorphose' group exhibition at the JSH Building, Wits University, as part of the SAIIA 90th anniversary. With each new project, Nyembe strives to create work that is both visually captivating and intellectually stimulating, aiming to provoke thought, spark conversation, and ultimately inspire positive change. By embracing a post-humanist perspective, she seeks to re-imagine the human-nature relationship and envision a future where technology and ecology coexist harmoniously.
